Compost Coordinator
Reports to: Executive or Operations Director
Role type: In-person
Status & Pay: Part-time, non-exempt, hourly rate $18 – $20/hour (depending on experience)
Market Days:
- Saturdays, June 1 – November 23 / 8:00 AM 4:00 PM at St Nicholas Park (Harlem)
- Sundays, June 2 – November 24 / 8:00 AM 5:00 PM at Bronx Park (Pelham Parkway)
Primary Function: The Composting Coordinator will manage the food scrap collection at the drop-off site, inform attendees about composting, and create youth activities for the farmers market in Harlem & The Bronx.
Work Location/Conditions:
- Work may be in a community garden or market locations. Work hours are outdoors in all weather conditions for up to 8-hour shifts.
Duties:
- Manage the food scrap collection at the drop-off site, including setting up and breaking down the collection bins, ensuring proper sorting of food waste, and transporting the food waste to the compost facility.
- Provide information to market attendees about composting and the benefits of diverting food waste from landfills.
- Create and lead youth activities related to composting and sustainable practices at the market.
- Work with the Market Manager to ensure compliance with local regulations related to composting and food waste management.
- Maintain accurate records related to food scrap collection, including weights and volumes of food waste collected.
Requirements:
- Knowledgeable or willing to learn about composting and sustainable practices.
- Ability to lift and transport heavy bins of food waste.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience working with children and creating educational activities.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative.
- Proficiency in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
