Position Description:
The South Bronx United Academic Education interns have an exciting opportunity to collaborate with and supervise the SBU Academy. This academy is a project-based learning after-school program. The aim is to provide student-athletes with a comprehensive pathway from middle school through high school and college. Through the program, South Bronx United Academic Education interns will ultimately prepare student-athletes for post-secondary success.
As an intern, you will work 3 days a week, gaining hands-on experience in running a thriving after school program. This includes developing educational resources, providing mentorship to the students-athletes and facilitating small-group lessons.
This internship is ideal for individuals seeking practical experience in youth development, education, school counseling, or social work.
Responsibilities:
- Supporting academic activities: Interns will have the opportunity to assist in facilitating various educational activities within the afterschool program. This may include helping students with homework, leading small group discussions or study sessions, or providing additional support in specific subjects.
- Developing educational resources: Interns will have the opportunity to contribute to creating educational materials that align with program objectives and student needs. This involves designing lesson plans, creating worksheets or handouts, and researching relevant resources for college preparation or career development.
- Providing social-emotional support and mentorship: As an integral part of the program’s social-emotional learning component, interns will offer guidance and support to student-athletes. This could involve one-on-one mentoring sessions, group discussions on personal development topics, or helping students navigate challenges they may face academically or personally
Qualifications:
- Fluency in an language other than English preferred (many of our students may also speak Spanish or French)
- Interpersonal skills such as empathy, active listening, cultural awareness, sensitivity and adaptability
- Enthusiasm with the mission of South Bronx United and the South Bronx community
- A strong interest in youth development, education, school counseling, or social work.
- Experience working with diverse populations of students or volunteering in educational settings is preferred.
- Creativity and initiative in developing new ideas or resources are encouraged.
- Flexibility and teamwork are essential for adapting to changing circumstances and collaborating effectively with others.
- Confidence in facilitating individual and group academic work and lessons
