Senator Kavanagh chairs the Senate Housing Committee and continues to advance an ambitious housing and homelessness agenda, building on the nation-leading tenant protection laws he worked to enact in 2019, the good cause eviction law he helped to pass in 2024, and the reinstatement of the Housing Access Voucher Program (HAVP) in 2025. Additional priorities include gun violence prevention, environmental protection and climate change, economic and social justice, and privacy and consumer rights, as well as the many community issues we tackle on behalf of residents of Lower Manhattan.
We seek current MPA or MPP students (all years welcome) for a Legal Intern position during fall 2025. This internship is based in New York City, with time spent in the district office. Evening and weekend flexibility is essential, as community meetings and events frequently take place during this time. This is an unpaid internship position, however, we are committed to supporting interns in exploring alternative funding opportunities such as academic credit, work-study programs, or external scholarships that may be available through their educational institution. The internship runs from September-December, with flexible start and end dates.
MPA interns will have the opportunity to apply their public administration knowledge while gaining hands-on experience in legislative operations, including:
- Researching legislative, budgetary, and policy issues;
- Monitoring the legislative process and concocting strategy to advance bills;
- Drafting correspondence, briefings, presentations, and other materials;
- Engaging with legislative staff, policy experts, and advocates;
- Representing the office at legislative hearings, budget meetings, and community forums;
- Assisting with hearings of the Housing Committee.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with government, legislation, or public policy;
- Excellent oral and written communication, analytical, and research skills;
- Ability to multitask, meet deadlines, and work in a fast-paced office environment.
